BODY was created in response to my experience with an undiagnosed chronic illness, reflecting on the challenge of fighting for health despite simultaneously feeling betrayed by my body. I was heavily influenced by my experience throughout the illness of conceptualizing certain parts of my body as “functional” versus “broken,” and the struggle to feel a sense of connectedness between my body’s physical dysfunction and my mental desire for health. In manipulating the printed self-portraits before re-photographing them, my process and work serve as a metaphor for the emotional sense of segmentation experienced throughout my illness, and parallel the iterative process of self-healing.
