INTERNAL VOICES focuses on the internal dialogues instigated by my experiences within these illnesses. Depression is a disease of the mind and the thoughts. Therefore, it’s seemingly impossible to exist outside of the illness, because you cannot remove yourself from your thoughts, or your thoughts from you. I spent a lot of time stuck in cyclical and harmful thought patterns that I would have often tried to resolve with my art, but during this time, I was completely disconnected from and disimpassioned towards my artwork and photography. I created these photographs in retrospect, once I had begun to mentally heal, looking back on the internal dialogues and debates I had spent hours consumed by. I chose a very reductive visual language to parallel the way my mind often functioned like a blank slate, occupied by a singular thought or mantra, and the diptych format to highlight the way thoughts can morph and interrelate.
